Got Game? Consumer Reports puts fitness games to the test

Some games got more game than others when it comes to fitness.

That’s what Consumer Reports discovered when they pitted five of the most popular workout titles against each other in head-to-head testing.

Enlisting a squad of fitness freaks, Consumer Reports had their gamer lab rats score the titles on six factors ranging from fun to conditioning elements.

Each of the five games tested required the optional motion controls for the three gaming consoles: Wii Remote for Nintendo Wii U, the PlayStation Move and Eye for the Sony PlayStation3, and the Kinect for the Microsoft Xbox 360.

“Kinect games have a distinct advantage in this category since they track your full body movements, though accuracy varies from game to game,” concluded the testers.

On top of the workout heap, Nike+ Kinect Training got the nod for the best overall workout, while Zumba Fitness hit the second place sweet spot for combining fun playability with solid cardio drills.

Worst of the bunch: UFC Personal Trainer, with reviewers quipping, “We found that the ‘mountain climber’ exercises during the warm-up session were the most taxing in the workout, and that’s not a good sign.”

In the middle of the pack, Just Dance 4 and Your Shape Evolved 2013 didn’t fare much better with both labeled lightweight workouts at best.
